Why Establish Paternity?

It is very important to establish paternity because, in the United States, a child born outside of marriage could lose child support, inheritance rights, and other benefits if the fatherhood of the child is not legally established.

Whether you are seeking government assistance or child support from the father, paternity must be established in order to do so. To receive government assistance, a father’s name must be listed on the birth certificate. In order to list a father’s name on the birth certificate, a paternity affidavit or acknowledgment of paternity must be processed. Basically, the state will seek the father for support before they offer it.

In addition to the legal benefits, establishing paternity has emotional benefits. Establishing paternity could strengthen the bond between the child and his or her dad. It could also enable the father to enforce his parental rights, such as visitation and custody in the case of a breakup.

It is also important to establish paternity for medical reasons. By knowing the biological father of the child, the child’s family medical history could be revealed. It is important to make sure that the correct biological father is identified. Mothers can be sure that her child’s biological father is identified by verifying the relationship with a DNA paternity test.
