In August of 2008, Robert McClendon was released from prison after serving 18 years for a rape he always maintained he did not commit. DNA Diagnostics Center's Forensic Division provided the testing, at the request of the University of Cincinnati/Ohio Innocence Project and the Columbus Dispatch.

In March of 2009, McClendon visited DDC together with Joseph Fears, another incarcerated man who was recently proven innocent through DNA testing. The visit was emotional for McClendon, as he met the scientists and support staff who worked on his case and viewed the technical instruments that led to his freedom.
